The Martin Luther King Cougars had already won six in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 23 points), and they went ahead and made it seven on Friday. They walked away with a 34-22 win over West Philadelphia. Martin Luther King had a rough season last year, but theylook ready to turn that poor record around this year.
Dontay Armstrong and Mekhi Bryant, West Philadelphia certainly did their best on Friday to try and avoid the loss. Armstrong gained 62 total yards and two touchdowns, while Bryant rushed for 101 yards on only 12 carries. Amin Winston made the highlight reel by snagging an interception and taking it all the way to the house.
Martin Luther King's win was their fourth straight on the road (dating back to last season), which bumped their overall record up to 7-1. That said, the team wasn't facing the toughest opposition over that stretch, as it included 2-7 Frankford and 3-10 Frankford (their opponents had an average overall winning percentage of 37.4% over those games). As for West Philadelphia, their defeat dropped their record down to 6-3.
Both teams are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Martin Luther King will take on Frankford at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Frankford comes in on a streak of failing to score more than 12 points in their last seven games, a trend the squad is of course eager to reverse. As for West Philadelphia, they will be playing in front of their home fans against Mastery Charter North - Pickett at 3:00 p.m. on Friday.
