Charlottesville hasn't had much luck against Monticello recently, but that could start to change on Tuesday. The Black Knights will look to defend their home field against the Mustangs at 6:30 p.m. Charlottesville is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 8.8 runs per game this season.
Charlottesville took a loss when they played away from home on Thursday, but their home fans gave them all the motivation they needed on Monday. They came out on top against Staunton by a score of 9-5. The win continues a trend for the Black Knights in their matchups with the Storm: they've now won five in a row.
Liam Frazier made a splash while hitting and pitching. On the mound, he tossed four innings while giving up just two earned runs off four hits. Frazier was also solid in the batter's box, scoring two runs while going 1-for-4. He also put up a double, which was his first of the season.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Brady Mauder, who went a perfect 2-for-2 with four RBI and two runs. Cabell Rose was another key player, scoring a run and stealing two bases while going 2-for-3.
Meanwhile, it was close, but on Thursday Monticello sidestepped Louisa County for a 3-1 victory. The win made it back-to-back victories for the Mustangs.
Like Charlottesville, Monticello also got a great game from a two-way player: Landon Hamm-Shiflett. He struck out six batters over 4.2 innings while giving up just one earned run off two hits. Monticello is 2-1 when Hamm-Shiflett allows three or fewer earned runs, but 1-5 otherwise. Hamm-Shiflett was also big at the plate, going a perfect 2-for-2 with three RBI.
Hamm-Shiflett wasn't the only one making solid contact as five players wound up with at least one hit. One of them was Gryfin Costa, who scored two runs while going 1-for-4.
Charlottesville pushed their record up to 5-1 with the win, which was their fourth straight at home. The home victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 9.3 runs over those games. As for Monticello, the win was their first on the road , bumping their record up to 3-6.
Monticello's pitching crew has a crucial task ahead of them: Charlottesville hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .377. It's a different story for Monticello, though, as they've only averaged .206. Will they be able to contain Charlottesville's hitters?
Charlottesville took their victory against Monticello when the teams last played back in May of 2024 by a conclusive 8-0 score. Do the Black Knights have another victory up their sleeve, or will the Mustangs turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
