Basketball Game Preview: Freer Buckaroos vs. McMullen County Cowboys

Freer is 0-9 against McMullen County since November of 2014 but things could change on Thursday. The Freer Buckaroos will take on the McMullen County Cowboys at 8:15 a.m. Freer is strutting in with some offensive muscle as they've averaged 55.4 points per game this season.

Last Tuesday, Freer didn't have quite enough to beat Cotulla and fell 55-53.

The loss doesn't tell the whole story though, as several players had good games. One of the most active was Dehondre Hayes, who dropped a double-double on 23 points and ten boards. With that strong performance, he is now averaging an impressive 16.9 points per game. Ayden Ramirez was another key player, almost dropping a double-double on 14 points and nine rebounds.

Meanwhile, McMullen County came tearing into Tuesday's game with three straight wins (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 26.7 points) and they left with even more momentum. They really took it to the Bulldogs for the full four quarters, racking up a 72-39 victory. The Cowboys have made a habit of sweeping their opponents off the court, having now won seven matches by 22 points or more this season.

McMullen County has been performing incredibly well recently as they've won seven of their last eight contests, which provided a nice bump to their 9-4 record this season. Those victories came thanks to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 63.6 points per game. As for Freer, their defeat ended a three-game streak of away wins dating back to last season and brought them to 7-2.

Freer ended up a good deal behind McMullen County when the teams last played back in December of 2023, losing 37-20. Can Freer avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
