Hammond is 1-9 against Cardinal Newman since February of 2019 but they'll have a chance to close the gap a little bit on Thursday. The Hammond Skyhawks will be playing at home against the Cardinal Newman Cardinals at 7:30 p.m. Both teams come into the match bolstered by wins in their previous matches.
Last Tuesday, Hammond was able to grind out a solid victory over Heathwood Hall Episcopal, taking the game 49-36. Given Hammond's advantage in MaxPreps' South Carolina basketball rankings (they are ranked 43rd, while Heathwood Hall Episcopal is ranked 178th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Cardinal Newman posted their closest victory yet this season on Tuesday. They narrowly escaped with a victory as the team sidled past Augusta Christian 54-51. The win was just what Cardinal Newman needed coming off of a 76-48 loss in their prior contest.
Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead Cardinal Newman to victory, but perhaps none more so than Evan Carter, who dropped a double-double on 17 points and ten rebounds. The team also got some help courtesy of Amarii King, who scored 15 points.
Hammond has been performing well recently as they've won three of their last four matchups, which provided a nice bump to their 7-4 record this season. As for Cardinal Newman, their victory bumped their record up to 10-13.
Hammond strolled past Cardinal Newman in their previous meeting back in February of 2023 by a score of 49-35. Does Hammond have another victory up their sleeve, or will Cardinal Newman turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
