Even though the Franklin County Eagles scored an imposing 64 points on Thursday, the Veritas Collegiate Academy Spartans still came out on top. Veritas Collegiate Academy walked away with a 76-64 victory over Franklin County. Given Veritas Collegiate Academy's advantage in MaxPreps' Virginia basketball rankings (they are ranked 106th, while Franklin County is ranked 313th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Leading Veritas Collegiate Academy to victory were Stephon Cherry and Macqell Freeman. Cherry scored 23 points along with seven rebounds, while Freeman dropped a double-double on 26 points and 11 rebounds. That's the first time this season that Freeman pulled down eight or more rebounds. Another player making a difference was Jailen Pinnix, who scored eight points along with seven rebounds.
The win makes it two in a row for Veritas Collegiate Academy and bumps their season record up to 6-2. As for Franklin County, they are on a four-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 2-7.
Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Veritas Collegiate Academy won't have much time to rest: their next game is against Cathedral Academy at 4:30 p.m. on December 29th. Cathedral Academy knows how to get points on the board -- the team has finished with flashy point totals in its past 11 matchups -- so hopefully Veritas Collegiate Academy likes a good challenge. As for Franklin County, they will head out on the road to face off against Staunton River at 7:00 p.m. on January 5, 2024.
