The Gregory-Portland Wildcats waltzed into their game on Wednesday with four straight wins but they left with five. They snuck past Victoria East with a 62-58 victory. Given Gregory-Portland's advantage in MaxPreps' Texas basketball rankings (they are ranked 165th, while Victoria East is ranked 605th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Shawn Williams was his usual excellent self, dropping a double-double on 24 points and 14 rebounds. He is on a roll when it comes to points, as he's now scored 15 or more in the last 19 games he's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Juaquin Felan, who scored ten points along with six rebounds.
Gregory-Portland's victory was their third straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 24-4. As for Victoria East, their defeat ended a three-game streak of wins at home and dropped them to 17-12.
Coincidentally, both teams will both be playing Victoria West the next time they take the court. Gregory-Portland will host Victoria West at 5:30 p.m. on Friday, while Victoria East will head out to face them at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
