The Perry Pumas will face off against the San Luis Sidewinders at 9:00 a.m. on Wednesday. Perry is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 10.5 runs per game this season.
While Perry didn't have the best season last year (they finished 10-18), it's starting to look like those struggles are a thing of the past. They blew past Gilbert 12-3 on Tuesday. The victory made it back-to-back wins for the Pumas.
Luke Calendo was a standout: he went a perfect 3-for-3 with three RBI, two runs, and one triple. The team also got some help courtesy of Ryan Davie, who scored three runs and stole a base while going 3-for-3.
Meanwhile, San Luis narrowly escaped with a victory as the team sidled past Gilbert 3-2.
Zaid Cardenas made a big impact while hitting and pitching. On the mound, he tossed three innings while giving up just two earned runs off one hit. That's the fewest hits he has allowed since back in February of 2024. He was also stellar in the batter's box, going 2-for-3 with one home run and two RBI. That home run was his first of the season.
In other pitching news, Jared Burgueno looked comfortable as he didn't allow a single earned run while striking out eight over four innings pitched. He also tossed no earned runs, which is notable because San Luis is 2-1 when he allows at most three earned runs, but 3-4 otherwise.
Cardenas wasn't the only one making solid contact as five players wound up with at least one hit. One of them was Arnold Jimenez, who scored a run and stole a base while going 2-for-3. That's the most hits Jimenez has posted since back in April of 2024. Obet Zaragoza also deserves some recognition as he snagged his first stolen base of the season.
San Luis hit smart and finished the game with only one strikeout. They are 2-1 when they post two or more strikeouts.
Perry's win bumped their record up to 7-1. As for San Luis, the victory got them back to even at 5-5.
San Luis' pitching crew has a crucial task ahead of them: Perry has hit smart this season, having averaged an OBP of .502. It's a different story for San Luis, though, as they've only averaged .339.
