The Burges Mustangs will venture away from home to challenge the Socorro Bulldogs at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Burges has given up an average of 9.6 runs per game this season, so hopefully the team got some pitching drills in this week.
Burges fell victim to El Dorado and their airtight pitching crew on Saturday. They lost 15-0 to the Aztecs. The Mustangs have now taken an 'L' in back-to-back games.
Burges saw three different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Annaliese Avina, who went 1-for-2 with one triple.
Meanwhile, Socorro put another one in the bag on Saturday to keep their perfect season alive. They were the clear victor by a 10-3 margin over Fort Stockton. The Bulldogs might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won 12 games by six runs or more this season.
Haley Rodriguez spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered just two earned (and one unearned) runs on four hits and racked up nine Ks. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't tossed less than six strikeouts in ten consecutive appearances.
On the hitting side, the team relied heavily on Leilene Cardoza, who went 3-for-4 with one home run, five RBI, and two runs. The dominant performance gave her a new career-high in RBI. Another player making a difference was Victoria Perez, who went 1-for-4 with one home run and three RBI.
Socorro hit smart and finished the game with only one strikeout. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now struck out at most five strikeouts in 17 consecutive matchups dating back to last season.
Burges' defeat dropped their record down to 9-11. As for Socorro, their record now sits at 16-0.
Tuesday's contest might come down to which pitcher can control the ball better. Burges has hit smart this season, having averaged an OBP of .537. However, it's not like Socorro struggles in that department as they've averaged .539. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Burges might still be hurting after the 10-0 loss they got from Socorro when the teams last played back in February of 2021. Can Burges avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
