Monsignor Martin recap Oct. 23, 2012
Canisius extended the longest winning streak in Monsignor Martin this week by beating Bishop Timon-St. Jude, 26-14. The victory was the eighth in a row for the Crusaders.
St. Joseph's Collegiate Institute was able to crack the Top 25 in the state rankings this week after topping St. Mary's. The Marauders came in at 18 in the state poll after placing at number 31 last week.
Tyler Mascio and Qadree Ollison gave Canisius a balanced attack through the air and ground last week. Mascio threw for 67 yards and one touchdown, while Ollison ran for 203 yards. Teammate Mascio added to the ground attack by rushing for 58 yards.
Rod Payne was the best wideout in the league this week as St. Joseph's Collegiate Institute bested the Lancers. Payne racked up one reception for 45 yards.
Rich Robbins' team's Mascio and Denzel Benton have formed a dynamic duo this season, leading the league in both passing and receiving yards. Mascio has thrown for 1253 yards this season, while Benton, a 6-foot-0 receiver, has 31 catches for 622 yards. Anthony DiFrancesco from Cardinal O'Hara leads the league in rushing with 1194 yards.
The marquee game in Monsignor Martin this week will be the clash between Dennis Gilbert's team and the Crusaders. The Marauders enters the contest ranked 18th in the state, while Canisius ranks sixth.
There should be lots of points scored when St. Joseph's Collegiate Institute and the Crusaders face off this week. The top two offenses in the league, the Marauders comes in having scored 289 this season, while Canisius has scored 295. St. Joseph's Collegiate Institute scored 56 points last week as it beat St. Mary's.
St. Francis took down the Hawks 39-14 last week, the largest margin of any game.
