The Robert C. Byrd Eagles will venture away from home to square off against the University Hawks at 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday. Robert C. Byrd is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 8.1 runs per game this season.
Robert C. Byrd is coming in fresh off a high-stakes matchup with another one of West Virginia's top teams: Bridgeport, who was ranked second at the time (Robert C. Byrd was ranked 12th). The Eagles lost 15-5 to the Indians on Tuesday.
Cooper Floyd was cooking despite his team's loss, going 2-for-4 with one home run, two runs, and one triple. Saverio Destito was another key player, getting on base in all three of his plate appearances with one home run and two RBI.
Meanwhile, winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask University). They were the clear victors by a 16-5 margin over Preston on Monday. The Hawks not only won on Monday, but they posted their biggest win since April 24, 2025 (when they won 16-0).
University also got a great performance from Joey Deiriggi as he pitched 4.2 innings while giving up just one earned (and four unearned) runs off six hits. Deiriggi has become a key player for the Hawks: the team is 4-2 when he allows at most one earned run, but 5-14 otherwise.
On the hitting side, Max Cash and James Bryner did most of the damage at the plate: Cash went 2-for-4 with one home run, five RBI, and two runs, while Bryner went 2-for-4 with one home run and six RBI. Those six RBI gave Bryner a new career-high. Chance Johnson also deserves some recognition as he scored his first run of the season.
University kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 13 hits. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now got at least nine hits in three consecutive games.
University's victory ended a four-game drought on the road and puts them at 9-16. As for Robert C. Byrd, their defeat dropped their record down to 18-8.
Robert C. Byrd's speedy runners might be the difference in Wednesday's matchup. The Eagles have been swiping bases left and right this season, having averaged 3 stolen bases per game. It's a different story for University, though, as they've been averaging only 1.1 stolen bases. Will they be able to secure the bases, or will Robert C. Byrd continue to outrun the ball?
Robert C. Byrd got the 'W' in their previous matchup two weeks ago against University by a conclusive 13-3 score. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Eagles since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
