Gatlinburg-Pittman is 1-9 against Sevier County since March of 2019 but they'll have a chance to close the gap a little bit on Monday. The Highlanders are taking a road trip to face off against the Smoky Bears at 5:30 p.m. Gatlinburg-Pittman is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 7.8 runs per game this season.
Gatlinburg-Pittman easily dispatched Pigeon Forge on Thursday, but unfortunately both the margin and the ultimate result were a different story in this one. The Highlanders fell just short of PikeView by a score of 6-4 on Saturday. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest loss the Highlanders have suffered since May 2, 2024.
Bailey Norris spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered four earned (and two unearned) runs on ten hits and racked up eight Ks. She has been consistent for a while: she hasn't given up more than two walks in 14 consecutive appearances.
At the plate, Alexis Stooksbury and Ashlynn Kunkle stepped up to the plate in a big way. Stooksbury got on base in all three of her plate appearances with two stolen bases, while Kunkle earned two runs and four stolen bases.
Meanwhile, Sevier County had already won five in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 8.8 runs) and they went ahead and made it six on Thursday. They walked away with a 13-8 victory over the Panthers.
Jade Hubbard made a big impact while hitting and pitching. On the mound, she tossed seven innings while giving up just two earned (and six unearned) runs off nine hits. Hubbard was also big at the plate, going 2-for-3 with two stolen bases, three runs, and one triple.
In other batting news, Ashley Morgan was incredible, going 2-for-3 with three stolen bases, three runs, and one RBI. That's the most runs she has posted since back in March. Another player making a difference was Emma McClure, who went 2-for-3 with two RBI and one double.
Sevier County's win was their fifth straight at home, which pushed their record up to 10-10. The home victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 10.2 runs over those games. As for Gatlinburg-Pittman, their defeat dropped their record down to 7-9.
The pitchers for both teams better look sharp on Monday as neither team is afraid to steal. Gatlinburg-Pittman has been swiping bases left and right this season, having averaged 5.3 stolen bases per game. However, it's not like Sevier County struggles in that department as they've been averaging an even more impressive 3.2 stolen bases. The only question left is which team can snag more.
Gatlinburg-Pittman might still be hurting after the 17-2 loss they got from Sevier County when the teams last played two weeks ago. Can the Highlanders avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
