McKeel Academy hasn't had much luck against Berkeley Prep recently, but that could start to change on Tuesday. The Wildcats will host the Buccaneers at 6:30 p.m. McKeel Academy is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 6.2 runs per game this season.
McKeel Academy easily dispatched Lake Region on Tuesday, but unfortunately both the margin and the ultimate result were a different story in this one. The Wildcats fell just short of Santa Fe Catholic by a score of 6-4 on Wednesday.
Jorge Cordova was huge no matter where he played even without the win. He looked comfortable on the mound, striking out ten batters over 4.2 innings while giving up four earned (and two unearned) runs off five hits (and only one walk). He has been consistent recently: he hasn't given up more than two walks in four consecutive appearances. He was also big at the plate, going 1-for-4 with one home run.
In other batting news, Brody McMillan was cooking despite his team's loss, going 2-for-4 with one home run and two RBI. That home run was his first of the season. Carter Rouse was another key player, going 2-for-4 with one stolen base, one run, and one RBI.
Meanwhile, Berkeley Prep came tearing into Saturday's game with three straight wins (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 6 runs), and they left with even more momentum. They came out on top against the Vikings by a score of 9-6.
Josh Herrmann and Mason Warren did most of the damage at the plate: Herrmann went a perfect 3-for-3 with one home run, two runs, and two RBI, while Warren went 2-for-3 with one home run, two runs, and two RBI. The team also got some help courtesy of Carson Binder, who went 1-for-4 with one home run and two RBI.
Berkeley Prep lost a few balls and finished the game with three home runs. The team's really been improving in that area: they've now improved their home run total in three consecutive contests.
McKeel Academy's defeat dropped their record down to 4-6. As for Berkeley Prep, their win bumped their record up to 8-4.
Fans could be in store for some top-tier slugging on Tuesday. McKeel Academy hasn't had any problems when it comes to power this season, having averaged 0.7 home runs per game. However, it's not like Berkeley Prep struggles in that department as they've been averaging an even more impressive 0.9 home runs. With so much power on both teams, it'll be down to the pitchers to keep the mound locked down.
