We've got a battle between Panthers coming up. Coconino is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 13.2 runs per game this season.
Coconino easily dispatched Ironwood on Friday, but unfortunately both the margin and the ultimate result were a different story in this one. Coconino fell just short of Sunrise Mountain by a score of 10-8 on Friday. The Panthers' defeat signaled the end of their three-game winning streak.
Katelynn Yazzie made the most of her time at bat despite the final result and scored a run while going 3-for-4. What's more, she posted three RBI, the most she's had since back in March of 2024. Another player making a difference was Cassidey Castillo, who scored three runs while going 3-for-4.
Even though they lost, Coconino kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 17 hits. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now got at least 11 hits every time they've taken the field this season.
Meanwhile, winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Paradise Honors). They walked away with a 7-4 victory over Ironwood on Friday. The win was a breath of fresh air for the Panthers as it put an end to their four-game losing streak dating back to last season.
Olivia Jimenez Facio made a splash no matter where she played. On the mound, she struck out seven batters over three innings while giving up just two earned runs off two hits. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't given up more than two walks in three consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, going 2-for-3 with two RBI. She also got two hits, marking her first of the season.
In other batting news, Anna Landa was excellent, scoring two runs and stealing a base while going 1-for-2. Those runs marked the first that she scored this season. Lexi Jordan was another key player, scoring a run and stealing two bases.
Paradise Honors' first victory this season bumped their record up to 1-3. As for Coconino, their loss was their first of the season and makes their record 3-1.
The batters for both teams will have to hit smart on Tuesday as both have some strikeout artists on the roster. Coconino has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 8.2 strikeouts per game. However, it's not like Paradise Honors struggles in that department as they've been averaging 6.8 strikeouts. Considering how easily both teams rack up Ks, the hitters on both teams better bring their A-game into this one.
Coconino skirted past Paradise Honors 2-1 in their previous meeting back in March of 2024. Will Coconino repeat their success, or does Paradise Honors have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
