Laurel Highlands recap Sept. 26, 2012
The biggest upset of the week belonged to Westmont Hilltop, who took down 245th ranked Somerset, 17-14. Lukas Kleinmeyer ran for 77 yards and caught two passes for 40 yards in the win.
Brody Shuty of Bishop Carroll ran for the longest rushing play in Laurel Highlands this season against Penn Cambria last week. Shuty ran for 88 yards on the play and finished with 100 on the day as his team fell to the Panthers.
Bishop McCort's dynamic duo of Zaine Tomkowski and Jordan Spangler proved tough for Bedford to stop, as they were the top passer and receiver in the league this week. Tomkowski threw for 229 yards and one touchdown and Spangler had 90 yards receiving. Luke DiFrancesco helped Bishop McCort's passing attack out by catching two balls for 73 yards.
Blake Faulkner was the most productive running back in the league this week. In 13 carries, he ran for 107 yards as the Eagles beat the Bison. Tanner Stull also contributed to the rushing game with 88 yards on the ground.
Steve Sujansky made the biggest impact on defense this week as Somerset fell to the Hilltoppers. The 5-foot-11 junior grabbed one sack.
6-foot-1 quarterback Tomkowski of Bishop McCort is the league leader in passing yards this season with 699. He has also thrown five touchdowns. On the ground, Westmont Hilltop's Sam Curry has rushed for 413 yards which leads the league. The leading receiver in the league this season is Kyle Flick. The Richland star has 20 catches for 417 yards.
A big matchup in Laurel Highlands this week will be when Kevin Sheridan's team takes on Richland. The Crushers are currently in fourth, while the Rams are in first.
Tomkowski and DiFrancesco provided fans with a highlight when they connected against Bedford. The connection was good for 70 yards, the longest such play in the league this season.
