Benet Academy scored a stunning upset when it knocked off Marist, 34-24. At the time, the Red Hawks were ranked fourth in the state, while the Redwings were 58th.
The biggest upset of the week belonged to Notre Dame, who took down 24th ranked Joliet Catholic Academy, 42-33.
St. Viator's offense was tough to stop this week, as it produced the league's top passer, rusher and receiver. Bob Calmeyn threw for 235 and two touchdowns and Kevin Hammarlund had 189 yards receiving. On the ground Mayo Arogundade chipped in 137 yards. Ben Dickey helped St. Viator's passing attack out by catching three balls for 27 yards.
Hugh Masterson made the biggest impact on defense this week as the Lions bested Marian Catholic. The 6-foot-4 defensive lineman recorded one fumble.
St. Viator's Calmeyn and Hammarlund have formed a dynamic duo this season, leading East Suburban Catholic in both passing and receiving yards. Calmeyn has thrown for 1314 yards this season, while Hammarlund, a 6-foot-0 receiver, has 24 catches for 468 yards. The Hilltoppers' Ty Isaac leads the league in rushing yards with 799.
Two of the top units in the league will face off this week when Joliet Catholic Academy takes on Benet Academy. Dan Sharp's team's offense has racked up 273 points this season, earning them the top spot in the league, while Patrick New's team has allowed only 68 on the year.
A big matchup in the league this week will be when the Hilltoppers take on the Redwings. Joliet Catholic Academy is currently in third, while Benet Academy is in second.
Calmeyn and Hammarlund provided fans with a highlight when they connected against the Spartans. The connection went for 56 yards, the longest such play in East Suburban Catholic this season.
