After a string of four wins, the Hodgeman County Longhorns's good fortune finally ran out on Tuesday. They fell 67-58 to Spearville. Having run the score up that high, both teams might be doing some extra defensive drills very soon.
When it comes to explaining why Hodgeman County lost, one person who can't be blamed is Owen Reece. Despite the final result, he scored 31 points along with seven rebounds and three steals. That was a full 53.4% of Hodgeman County's points, marking the 11th time in a row he's earned more than a third of the team's points. Hazen Rydquist was another key contributor, scoring 13 points.
Even though they lost, Hodgeman County smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 14 offensive rebounds. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Spearville only pulled down six offensive rebounds.
Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead Spearville to victory, but perhaps none more so than Dereck Alcala, who scored 23 points. The team also got some help courtesy of Ian Melendez, who scored 15 points along with six rebounds.
Hodgeman County's loss dropped their record down to 8-3. As for Spearville, they are on a roll lately: they've won six of their last eight matches, which provided a nice bump to their 7-4 record this season.
Hodgeman County will face off against Minneola at 3:00 p.m. on Friday. Minneola is hoping to put an end to a three-game streak of away losses. As for Spearville, they will square off against South Gray at 8:15 p.m. on Friday. South Gray has been dominant on offense recently, as they've racked up an incredible 774 points over their last ten matchups.
