Lawrence County has enjoyed a two-game homestand but will soon have to dust off their road jerseys. They will take on the Wayne Pioneers at 5:45 p.m. on Tuesday. Lawrence County will have to bring their A-game into this one, as they are staring down a pretty big deficit in their respective state's rankings (they are ranked 55th in Kentucky, while Wayne is ranked fourth in West Virginia).
Last Friday, Lawrence County was within striking distance but couldn't close the gap as they fell 59-54 to Floyd Central.
Meanwhile, Wayne put another one in the bag on Friday to keep their perfect season alive. They blew past Logan, posting a 68-34 victory at home. Wayne has made a habit of sweeping their opponents off the court, having now won ten contests by 20 points or more this season.
Wayne can attribute much of their success to Laneigh Brooks, who scored 15 points along with six rebounds and six steals, and Brooke Adkins, who scored 23 points along with four steals. Adkins is absolutely dominating the steal category: she's posted at least two every time she's taken the court this season. Mikayla Stacy was another key contributor, scoring seven points along with seven rebounds and four steals.
Lawrence County's defeat dropped their record down to 9-6. As for Wayne, their victory was their fifth straight at home, which pushed their record up to 12-0.
Lawrence County was dealt a bruising 68-38 loss at the hands of Wayne in their previous meeting back in January of 2016. The game was all but decided by halftime, at which point Lawrence County was down 41-18.
