Division II-A recap November 5, 2013
Westerly scored a stunning upset when it knocked off Coventry, 33-22. At the time, the Oakers were ranked 19th in the state, while the Bulldogs were 27th.
Nick Murgo of Mt. Hope ran for the longest rushing play in Division II-A this season against Toll Gate last week. Murgo scampered for 83 yards on the play and finished with 152 on the day as his team bested the Titans.
Mt. Hope's offense was tough to stop this week, as it produced the league's top passer, rusher and receiver. Aidan Silva threw for 24 and 1 touchdown and Matthew Mendonca had 29 yards receiving. On the ground Murgo chipped in 152 yards. Jacob Ramos helped Mt. Hope's passing attack out by catching 1 ball for 16 yards.
Murgo was a passing and rushing force as Brian Cote's team beat Toll Gate. Murgo's favorite target this week was Mendonca, who caught 2 passes for 29 yards.
Mendonca was the best wideout in the league this week as the Huskies bested Matthew Mancuso's team. Ramos helped Mt. Hope's passing attack out by catching 1 ball for 16 yards.
Mt. Hope's offense cannot be tamed this season and the Huskies feature the season leaders in passing, rushing and receiving yards. Kyle Valenzuela has thrown for 383 yards and 2 touchdowns this season, while Mendonca has 10 catches for 155 yards.
The marquee game in the league this week will be the clash between Coventry and Woonsocket. Mark Foley's team enters the contest ranked 22nd in the state, while the Villa Novans ranks 10th.
There should be lots of points scored when Mt. Hope and Warwick Veterans face off this week. The top two offenses in the league, the Huskies comes in having scored 133 this season, while the Hurricanes have scored 121. Mt. Hope scored 28 points last week as it topped the Titans.
Johnston extended the longest winning streak in Division II-A this week by beating Warwick Veterans, 22-21. This was the team's fifth consecutive win.
