Seaford hasn't had much luck against Caesar Rodney recently, but that could start to change on Thursday. The Bluejays will be playing in front of their home fans against the Riders at 12:00 p.m. Both come into the match bolstered by wins in their previous matches.
Having struggled with six defeats in a row, Seaford turned things around against First State Military Academy on Tuesday. Their pitchers stepped up to hand the Bulldogs a 3-0 shutout.
Colin Hignutt was a major factor no matter where he played. On the mound, he pitched one inning while giving up no earned runs or hits. He has been consistent: he hasn't given up more than two walks in seven consecutive appearances. He was also big at the plate, going 1-for-2 with three stolen bases and one run. Those three stolen bases gave him a new career-high.
In other batting news, Uriah Taylor-Brown was excellent, getting on base in two of his three plate appearances with two stolen bases and two runs. Those stolen bases were his first of the season.
Meanwhile, Caesar Rodney faced Milford in a battle between two of the state's top teams on Thursday. The Riders put the hurt on the Buccaneers with a sharp 9-3 win. Winning may never get old, but the Riders sure are getting used to it with their fifth in a row.
Like Seaford, Caesar Rodney also got a great game from a two-way player: Evan Fowler. He looked comfortable on the mound, pitching two innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit. Fowler was also solid in the batter's box, going 3-for-4 with two runs.
In other pitching news, Steven Donigan tossed a big game, not allowing a single earned run while striking out ten over five innings pitched.
Back at the plate, the team relied heavily on William Lorentz, who went 3-for-4 with three RBI, two runs, and one stolen base. Jadrian Sanchez was another key player, going 2-for-4 with two runs, two RBI, and one double.
Caesar Rodney kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 14 hits. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now got at least eight hits in five consecutive games.
Caesar Rodney's victory was their third straight at home, which pushed their record up to 6-2-1. The home wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 1.7 runs on average over those games. As for Seaford, their victory bumped their record up to 2-6.
The batters for both teams will have to hit smart on Thursday as both have some strikeout artists on the roster. Seaford has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 7.5 strikeouts per game. However, it's not like Caesar Rodney struggles in that department as they've been averaging 9.9 strikeouts. Considering how easily both teams rack up Ks, the hitters on both teams better bring their A-game into this one.
Seaford might still be hurting after the 16-4 loss they got from Caesar Rodney when the teams last played back in April of 2024. Will the Bluejays have more luck at home instead of on the road? Check MaxPreps after the action for a full breakdown of the game and more baseball content.
