Las Animas hasn't had much luck against Burlington recently, but that could start to change on Tuesday. The Trojans will look to defend their home field against the Cougars at 4:00 p.m. Las Animas is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 8.8 runs per game this season.
While Las Animas' win against Swink wasn't quite the blowout it was the last time the pair played, they still came out on top. The Trojans narrowly escaped with a victory as the team sidled past the Lions 6-4. The win continues a trend for the Trojans in their matchups with the Lions: they've now won four in a row.
Braydon Ortiz was a major factor while hitting and pitching. He struck out 13 batters over 6.2 innings while giving up three earned (and one unearned) runs off seven hits. He has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't given up more than two walks in ten consecutive appearances. He was also big at the plate, getting on base in all four of his plate appearances with one stolen base, one run, and one RBI.
Ortiz wasn't the only one making solid contact as four players wound up with at least one hit. One of them was Kree Wallace, who went 1-for-3 with two runs and one double.
Meanwhile, Burlington waltzed into their game on Saturday with two straight wins... but they left with three. They came out on top against the Dragons by a score of 11-6.
Like Las Animas, Burlington also got a great game from a two-way player: Rowdy Humrich. On the mound, Humrich tossed two innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. Meanwhile, Daxton Skarphol struck out nine batters over five innings while giving up just one earned (and five unearned) runs off seven hits. Humrich also tossed no earned runs, which is notable because Burlington is 2-1 when he allows at most two earned runs, but 6-7 otherwise. At bat, Humrich got on base in three of his five plate appearances with two stolen bases and one run, while Skarphol got on base in all five of his plate appearances with three stolen bases, two RBI, and one run. Those three stolen bases gave Skarphol a new career-high.
In other batting news, Scout Humrich was incredible, getting on base in four of his five plate appearances with three stolen bases, three runs, and one RBI. That's the most runs he has posted since back in April of 2024. The team also got some help courtesy of Maguire Franz, who went 1-for-5 with two stolen bases, two runs, and one RBI.
Burlington kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 12 hits. They are 3-1 when they post 11 or more hits.
Las Animas' victory bumped their record up to 15-3. As for Burlington, the win got them back to even at 8-8.
Tuesday's matchup might come down to which pitcher can control the ball better. Las Animas has hit smart this season, having averaged an OBP of .506. However, it's not like Burlington struggles in that department as they've averaged .455. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Las Animas was able to grind out a solid victory over Burlington when the teams last played back in May of 2024, winning 4-1. Do the Trojans have another victory up their sleeve, or will the Cougars turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
