The Covington-Douglas Wildcats will head out on the road to face off against the Waukomis Chiefs at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Covington-Douglas will be strutting in after a win while Waukomis will be coming in after a defeat.
Last Thursday, Covington-Douglas got themselves on the board against Canton, but Canton never followed suit. They simply couldn't be stopped as they easily beat the Tigers 48-0 at home. The result was nothing new for Covington-Douglas, who have now won five matchups by 20 points or more so far this season.
Covington-Douglas' success was spearheaded by the efforts of Ford Smith, who threw for 125 yards and three touchdowns, and Miguel Tarango, who rushed for 86 yards and three touchdowns on only five carries. Gavin Beckham-hooten was another key contributor, gaining 87 total yards and a touchdown.
Meanwhile, Waukomis' recent rough patch got a bit rougher two weeks ago after their fourth straight loss. They were beaten by Seiling 46-0. While losing is never fun, Waukomis can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Oklahoma football rankings (they are ranked 29th, while Seiling is ranked first).
Covington-Douglas' victory was their eighth straight at home (dating back to last season), bumping their overall record up to 6-1. Those good results were due in large part to their offensive dominance across that stretch, as they averaged 43.5 points per game. Waukomis has been struggling recently, as they've lost five of their last six matchups, which put a noticeable dent in their 3-5 record this season.
Everything came up roses for Covington-Douglas against Waukomis when the teams last played back in October of 2022 as the squad secured a 48-0 victory. The rematch might be a little tougher for Covington-Douglas since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
