The United South Panthers will finish 2023 at home by hosting the Los Fresnos Falcons at 2:00 p.m. on Friday. Both teams come into the matchup bolstered by wins in their previous matches.
Last Thursday, United South beat Somerset 47-36. Given United South's advantage in MaxPreps' Texas basketball rankings (they are ranked 184th, while Somerset is ranked 467th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Los Fresnos has made a habit of sweeping their opponents off the court, having now won nine games by 23 points or more this season. They took their contest at home on Tuesday with ease, bagging a 77-34 victory over Roma. With Los Fresnos ahead 44-13 at the half, the game was all but over already.
Los Fresnos got their win on the backs of several key players, but it was Gio Galvan out in front who scored 15 points along with eight rebounds and seven assists. The matchup was Galvan's 22nd in a row with at least ten points. The team also got some help courtesy of Jj Salazar, who scored 19 points along with six assists and five rebounds.
United South pushed their record up to 15-7 with that win, which was their fourth straight on the road dating back to last season. As for Los Fresnos, their win bumped their record up to 18-5.
United South was able to grind out a solid win over Los Fresnos in their previous matchup back in December of 2022, winning 49-42. One of the biggest obstacles trying to stand in the way of that victory was Los Fresnos' Luis Ramirez, who scored 14 points along with six rebounds. Now that he won't be playing on Friday, will it be that much easier for United South to walk away with another win? Check MaxPreps.com after the match to find out.
