Avon has enjoyed the comforts of home their last two games, but now they'll head out on the road. They will square off against the Cathedral Fighting Irish at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday. The matchup should be an exciting one, as these teams are ranked near one another in Indiana (Avon is ranked 96th, while Cathedral is ranked 87th).
On Monday, Avon came up short against Upper Arlington and fell 61-54.
Despite the defeat, Avon got a solid performance out of Aniah Smith, who scored 22 points along with eight steals and six assists. Smith has been hot recently, having posted two or more steals the last eight times she's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Nevaeh Wren, who scored 14 points.
Meanwhile, Cathedral fought the good fight in their overtime game against Indianapolis Bishop Chatard on Friday but wound up with a less-than-desirable result. They were just a bucket shy of victory and fell 45-44 to the Trojans.
Despite their defeat, Cathedral saw several players rise to the challenge and make noteworthy plays. Taylor Lewis, who scored 14 points along with eight rebounds and three steals, was perhaps the best of all. Lewis is on a roll when it comes to rebounds, as she's now pulled down eight or more in the last 11 games she's played. Another player making a difference was Jaeda Wilson, who scored 14 points along with two steals.
Avon bumped their record down to 8-10 with that loss, which was their third straight at home. As for Cathedral, they now have a losing record at 9-10.
Keep an eye on the arc in Wednesday's matchup: Avon have made nailing deep shots look easy this year this season, having only averaged 7 threes per game. It's a different story for Cathedral, though, as they've been averaging only 2.4 threes per game. Given Avon's sizeable advantage in that area, Cathedral will need to find a way to close that gap.
Avon skirted past Cathedral 74-71 in their previous matchup back in January of 2023. One of the biggest obstacles trying to stand in the way of that victory was Cathedral's Layla Gold, who dropped a double-double on 35 points and ten rebounds. Now that she won't be playing on Wednesday, will it be that much easier for Avon to walk away with another win? There's only one way to find out.
