The Cairo Syrupmakers's four-game losing streak came to an end on Friday. They ended the year with a bang, routing Mary Persons 57-37. That looming 57-37 mark stands out as the most commanding margin for Cairo yet this season.
Leading Cairo to victory were Jykortnee Brown and Amari Powell. Brown scored 16 points along with three steals, while Powell scored 28 points along with eight rebounds. The contest was Powell's fourth in a row with at least ten points. Kylon Brown was another key contributor, scoring six points.
Mary Persons' defeat came despite a true team effort from the offense, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Dee Grier, who scored 11 points. The team also got some help courtesy of Malaki Knight, who scored seven points along with eight rebounds.
Mary Persons struggled to work together and finished the game with only four assists. That's the fewest assists they've managed all season.
Cairo's victory bumped their record up to 5-6. As for Mary Persons, their defeat was their fourth straight at home, which bumped their record down to 3-10.
Cairo and Hardaway will face off at 6:30 p.m. on January 5th without much rest after finishing up games yesterday. As for Mary Persons, they will head out on the road to face off against Tattnall Square Academy at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Tattnall Square Academy is currently enjoying a perfect season and no doubt want to keep things rolling.
