Basketball Recap: Katelyn Martinez Leads a Balanced Attack to Beat Wendover

St. Joseph hadn't done well against Wendover recently (they were 1-8 in their previous nine matchups), but they didn't let the past get in their way on Saturday. The St. Joseph Jayhawks strolled past the Wendover Wildcats with points to spare, taking the game 56-40. This was payback for the Jayhawks, who suffered a 45-24 defeat the last time these two teams met.

St. Joseph's victory was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Katelyn Martinez, who went 6 for 13 on her way to 22 points in addition to eight rebounds and six assists. Martinez is also on a roll when it comes to steals, as she's now grabbed two or more in the last 23 games she's played dating back to last season. Eliza Berg was another key player, going 7 for 11 on her way to 14 points and seven rebounds.

St. Joseph has been performing incredibly well recently as they've won six of their last seven matches, which provided a nice bump to their 7-4 record this season. As for Wendover, their loss was their ninth straight on the road dating back to last season, which dropped their record down to 1-13.

St. Joseph and Wendover could both be facing uphill battles in their next games considering their disadvantage in the MaxPreps Utah Rankings. St. Joseph (ranked 85th) will meet Draper APA (ranked 33rd) at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Similarly, Wendover (ranked 122nd) will meet Tabiona (ranked 34th) at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday.
