The Robert C. Byrd Eagles will head out to square off against the Morgantown Mohigans at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday. Robert C. Byrd is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 8.4 runs per game this season.
Robert C. Byrd took a ten-run defeat the last time they faced off against Buckhannon-Upshur, but this time they managed to keep it close and that made all the difference. The Eagles skirted past the Buccaneers 5-4. While the Eagles didn't have the best season last year (they finished 12-20), it's starting to look like those struggles are a thing of the past.
Ashton Shaffer was excellent, going 1-for-3 with one triple, two RBI, and one run. That's the most RBI he has posted since back in April of 2024. The team also got some help courtesy of Cooper Floyd, who scored two runs and stole two bases while getting on base in two of his three plate appearances.
Meanwhile, Morgantown faced Washington in a battle between two of the state's top teams on Friday. The Mohigans walked away with a 7-2 victory over the Patriots. Winning may never get old, but the Mohigans sure are getting used to it with their third in a row.
Morgantown got a massive performance out of Vincent Aloi, who scored two runs and stole a base while going 2-for-3. Ryan Nipper also deserves some recognition as he hit his first triple of the season.
Morgantown pushed their record up to 6-3 with the win, which was their 14th straight at home dating back to last season. Those home victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 7.3 runs over those games. As for Robert C. Byrd, the win (which was their third in a row) raised their record to 4-1.
Morgantown's hitters will have their work cut out for them on Saturday. Robert C. Byrd has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 7.4 strikeouts per game. It's a different story for Morgantown, though, as they've been averaging only 4 strikeouts. Will Robert C. Byrd keep running through batters, or will the Mohigans buck the trend?
Robert C. Byrd couldn't quite finish off Morgantown in their previous meeting back in May of 2023 and fell 3-1. Can the Eagles avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
