The Sahuaro Cougars will look to defend their home court on Tuesday against the Estrella Foothills Wolves at 7:00 p.m. Both squads will be entering this one on the heels of a big victory.
Winning is just a little bit easier when you work as a team to rack up nine more assists than your opponent, a fact Sahuaro proved on Monday. They blew past Mica Mountain 58-36. With Sahuaro ahead 41-21 at the half, the matchup was all but over already.
The match pitted two dominant guards against one another in Cassandra Coolidge and Isabella Webb. Coolidge had a great game and scored 24 points along with seven rebounds and two steals. Meanwhile, Webb was balling out in the loss, scoring 17 points along with six rebounds and four steals.
Meanwhile, Estrella Foothills had already won seven in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 53.9 points), and they went ahead and made it eight last Wednesday. They simply couldn't be stopped as they easily beat Agua Fria 69-15 on the road. Given Estrella Foothills' advantage in MaxPreps' Arizona basketball rankings (they are ranked 26th, while Agua Fria is ranked 151st), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead Estrella Foothills to victory, but perhaps none more so than Madison Pond, who almost dropped a double-double on 16 points and nine rebounds. Pond hasn't dropped below three steals for three straight games. The team also got some help courtesy of Eva Amenhauser, who scored 12 points along with six rebounds.
Sahuaro pushed their record up to 21-8 with that win, which was their fourth straight on the road. Those victories were due in large part to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 64.3 points per game. As for Estrella Foothills, their victory bumped their record up to 26-3.
Some high-performance offense is likely on the agenda as Sahuaro and Estrella Foothills are some of the highest scoring teams in the league. Sahuaro hasn't had any problem running up the score this season, having averaged 56.2 points per game. However, it's not like Estrella Foothills struggles in that department as they've been averaging 71.1 points per game. With both teams so easily able to put up points, the only question left is who can run the score up higher.
Sahuaro came up short against Estrella Foothills in their previous meeting back in December of 2023, falling 45-32. Will Sahuaro have more luck at home instead of on the road? Check MaxPreps after the action for a full breakdown of the game and more basketball content.
