The Falfurrias Fightin' Jerseys will venture away from home to take on the King Mustangs at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday. King took a loss in their last game and will be looking to turn the tables on Falfurrias, who comes in off a win.
Last Tuesday, Falfurrias got the win against Rockport-Fulton by a conclusive 17-7.
Derek Vasquez and RJ Ozuna made a big impact while hitting and pitching. Throwing, Vasquez struck out six batters over 3.2 innings while giving up no earned runs off five hits. Meanwhile, Ozuna tossed 2.1 innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit. What's more, he gave up only zero earned runs, the fewest he's had since back in February of 2024. At bat, Vasquez scored two runs while going 3-for-5, while Ozuna scored a run while getting on base in four of his five plate appearances. The dominant performance also gave Vasquez a new career-high in RBI (three).
In other batting news, Jax Garcia was a standout: he scored a run and stole a base while going 1-for-4. The dominant performance also gave him a new career-high in RBI (three). Another player making a difference was Ben Benavides, who scored two runs and stole a base while getting on base in all three of his plate appearances.
Meanwhile, King unfortunately couldn't capitalize on their home-field advantage in their season opener. They took a 5-2 hit to the loss column at the hands of Gregory-Portland on Tuesday. Surprisingly, this marked the seventh straight game that the away team has come away the victor.
Like Falfurrias, King also got a great game from a two-way player: Grant Hoogland. On the mound, he struck out six batters over four innings while giving up just one earned (and one unearned) run off one hit. Hoogland was also solid in the batter's box, going 1-for-3 with one triple, one run, and one RBI.
Hoogland wasn't the only one making solid contact as four players wound up with at least one hit. One of them was Christian Saenz, who scored a run while going 1-for-2.
Falfurrias' win was their eighth straight at home dating back to last season, which pushed their record up to 2-0-1. Those victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 1.6 runs over those games. As for King, their loss dropped their record down to 0-1.
