Cross County recap November 5, 2013
National Trail moved up to 361 from 401 in the state rankings this week, the biggest jump in Cross County. The Blazers were able to move up by beating Tri-County North 15-12.
Covington added to the longest winning streak in the league this week by beating Ansonia, 49-6. The win marks 10th in a row for the the Buccs.
Garrett Griffin threw for 264 yards and 2 touchdowns. He was 22-35 with 0 interceptions.
Trent Gilbert was a force in the backfield as Mississinawa Valley beat Bradford.
Gilbert was the most successful running back in the league this week. In 20 carries, he ran for 238 yards as the Blackhawks bested the Panthers. Teammate Dane Bloomenstock added to the ground attack by rushing for 221 yards.
Leading Cross County in both passing and receiving yards, Tony Sonsini's team's Griffin and Devin Mize have proven to be a lethal combination. 6-4 quarterback Griffin has thrown for 2,891 yards this season, while Mize has 57 catches for 943 yards. The Tigers' Jordan Newman leads the league in rushing yards with 1,443.
The Blazers' Mize is a few successful plays short of surpassing 1,000 yards receiving this season. He needs only 57 receiving yards against Mechanicsburg to hit that benchmark. He has recorded 57 catches for 943 yards this year.
An important game coming up in the league this week will be when Miami East takes on Tri-County North. The Vikings are in second place, while William Derringer's team is in fourth place.
National Trail and the Panthers played the most contested game in the league this week, with National Trail eventually emerging with a 15-12 victory. Griffin ran for 25 yards in the win.
