Sun Valley took a eight-run defeat the last time they faced off against Unionville, but this time they managed to keep it close and that made all the difference. The Vanguards skirted past the Longhorns 7-5. The Vanguards' hitters stepped up their game for this one, as that was the most runs they've scored all season.
Jackson Messick made a big impact while hitting and pitching. He didn't allow a single earned run while striking out 12 over five innings pitched. He has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't given up more than one earned run in seven consecutive appearances. He was also big at the plate, going 2-for-3 with one stolen base, one run, and one RBI.
In other batting news, Ryan Messick was excellent, going 2-for-3 with two runs, one double, and one RBI. Those two runs gave him a new career-high. Max Bartholf also deserves some recognition as he scored his first runs of the season.
