Vassar has enjoyed the comforts of home their last four games, but now they'll head out on the road. They will square off against the Mayville Wildcats at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday. Hopefully Vassar focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 12 on Monday.
Last Monday, Vassar came up short against All Saints Central and fell 55-48.
Despite the defeat, Vassar got a solid performance out of Austin Long, who scored 19 points along with five assists and five rebounds. That was a full 39.6% of Vassar's points, marking the third time in a row he's earned more than a third of the team's points. Another player making a difference was Landon Klinesmith, who scored six points along with six rebounds and two steals.
Meanwhile, Mayville beat Caseville 48-36 on Friday. The victory made it back-to-back wins for Mayville.
Mayville found their leader in underclassman Jackson Buhl, who almost dropped a double-double on 21 points and nine rebounds. Buhl has been hot recently, having posted nine or more rebounds the last three times he's played. Mason Halsne was another key contributor, scoring 12 points.
Vassar's defeat dropped their record down to 3-15. As for Mayville, their victory bumped their record up to 7-8.
This contest is one where the number of possessions is likely to be a big factor: Vassar have been smashing the glass this season, having averaged 27.1 rebounds per game. However, it's not like Mayville struggles in that department as they've been averaging 31.9 rebounds per game. Given these competing strengths, it'll be interesting to see how their clash plays out.
Vassar came out on top in a nail-biter against Mayville when the teams last played back in December of 2022, sneaking past 45-42. The rematch might be a little tougher for Vassar since the team won't have the home-court advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
