Basketball Game Preview: Maggie Walker vs. West Point Pointers

Maggie Walker will take on the West Point Pointers at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Both squads will be entering this one on the heels of a big victory.

While Maggie Walker didn't have the best season last year (they finished 7-14), it's starting to look like those struggles are a thing of the past. They took their match last Monday with ease, bagging a 56-29 win over Meadowbrook. Given Maggie Walker's advantage in MaxPreps' Virginia basketball rankings (they are ranked 161st, while Meadowbrook is ranked 356th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.

Maggie Walker found their leader in freshman Jalise Melson, who dropped a double-double on 18 points and 12 boards. As a matter of fact, that's the most points Melson has scored all season. Jamie Martin was another key player, putting up ten points and eight steals.

Meanwhile, West Point had already won four in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 26.5 points) and they went ahead and made it five on Thursday. They claimed a resounding 64-37 victory over the Royal Tigers.

West Point's win was their third straight at home, which pushed their record up to 7-2. Those victories came thanks to their defensive effort, having only surrendered 27.7 points per game. As for Maggie Walker, their victory bumped their record up to 6-2.

Everything came up roses for Maggie Walker against West Point when the teams last played back in December of 2024, as the squad secured a 60-33 win. Will Maggie Walker repeat their success, or does West Point have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
