Pebble Hills is a perfect 9-0 against Socorro since October of 2016 and they'll have a chance to extend that dominance on Friday. The Spartans will look to defend their home field against the Bulldogs at 7:30 p.m. Given that the two teams suffered a loss in their last games, they both have a little extra motivation heading into this matchup.
Pebble Hills blew Eastwood out of the water the last time the pair played, but on Friday Eastwood got their revenge. The Spartans fell just short of the Troopers by a score of 17-14. While the Spartans had to settle for second, they closed the game well in the third quarter, where they outscored the Troopers 8-3.
Despite the defeat, Pebble Hills saw an underclassman step up: sophomore Jaime Ortega picked up a sack, forced one fumble, and made eight total tackles.
Don't try to pin the team's loss on the defense: they kept the trenches locked down and allowed a mere 2.9 yards per carry. The team can thank Noe Villegas for the heroic effort on defense: he. Pebble Hills' ground attack was stronger, having averaged 4.9.
Pebble Hills' defense didn't let the opposing QB, get away unscathed either: they got into the backfield for four sacks. That dominant display was truly a team effort as four different players picked up one apiece. Ortega was another major factor on D, picking up a sack, forcing one fumble, and making eight total tackles.
Meanwhile, Socorro was not able to break out of their rough patch on Friday as the team picked up their third straight loss. They were outmatched by Franklin and fell 52-7. The Bulldogs were in a tough position after the first half, with the score already sitting at 31-0.
The match pitted two dominant backs against one another in Adrian Hunt and Ernie Powers. Powers had a great game and rushed for 279 yards and three TDs while picking up 16.4 yards per carry. Meanwhile, Hunt did his best for the losing side, rushing for 109 yards and one score.
Pebble Hills' defeat was their first in the district, dropping their district record down to 2-1 and their overall record down to 5-2. As for Socorro, they now have a losing record of 3-4.
Friday's contest might be decided on the ground. Pebble Hills has been excellent on the ground this season, having averaged 166 rushing yards per game. However, it's not like Socorro struggles in that department as they've been averaging 260.4 rushing yards. There's a good chance Friday's game turns into a tough fight on the ground.
Everything came up roses for Pebble Hills against Socorro when the teams last played back in October of 2024, as the squad secured a 55-26 win. One of the biggest obstacles trying to stand in the way of that victory was the Bulldogs' Eder Hernandez, who rushed for 133 yards and a pair of touchdowns on only 14 carries. Now that he won't be playing on Friday, will it be easier for the Spartans to walk away with another win? There's only one way to find out.
