It was a good run, but the Laney Buccaneers unfortunately witnessed the end of their five-game winning streak on Wednesday. They were dealt a 82-52 defeat at the hands of New Hanover. The defeat unfortunately continues a disappointing trend for Laney in their matchups with New Hanover: they've now lost eight in a row.
Laney's loss came despite a true team effort from the offense, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Shark Baynard, who scored ten points. Hezron Driver was another key contributor, scoring 11 points along with six rebounds.
New Hanover's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Rodmik Allen led the charge by scoring 16 points along with six assists and six rebounds. The team also got some help courtesy of Kellum Brown, who scored 14 points along with five steals.
Laney's loss ended an 11-game streak of wins at home and dropped them to 14-2. As for New Hanover, they pushed their record up to 16-0 with that victory, which was their eighth straight on the road.
Laney and Hoggard will face off at 7:30 p.m. on January 26th without much rest after finishing up games yesterday. Hoggard will have to bring their A-game into this one, as they are staring down a pretty big deficit in the MaxPreps North Carolina Rankings (they are ranked 136th, while Laney is ranked 40th). As for New Hanover, New Hanover and Ashley will face off at 8:00 p.m. on January 26th without much rest after finishing up games yesterday. Ashley is coming into the match on a three-game losing streak.
