Basketball Recap: Levi Haygood Key Part of a Team Effort in Wolves Win

Woods Charter proved they can win big last Friday (they won by 41) and on Monday they proved they can win the close ones too. They sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 42-40 victory over the Excelsior Classical Academy Flying Lions. This was a revenge game for the Wolves: when they faced off against the Flying Lions last Thursday, they had to take a 53-47 defeat.

Woods Charter got their win on the backs of several key players, but it was Levi Haygood out in front who dropped a double-double on 12 points and 13 boards. Haygood has been hot recently, having posted ten or more boards the last three times he's played. Alden Phelps was another key player, going 5 of 12 on his way to 12 points and five rebounds.

Woods Charter smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 13 offensive boards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least ten offensive rebounds in three consecutive matchups.

Excelsior Classical Academy's loss came despite strong showings from Hunter Goss and Luke Walczak. Goss dropped a double-double on 12 points and 14 rebounds, while Walczak posted 15 points. The team also got some help courtesy of Tyler Hill, who put up four points and eight rebounds.

Woods Charter now has a winning record of 4-3. As for Excelsior Classical Academy, their loss was their 13th straight on the road dating back to last season, which dropped their record down to 6-3.

Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Woods Charter and Seaforth will compete for holiday cheer at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Excelsior Classical Academy will take on Durham School of the Arts in a holiday battle at at 6:00 p.m. on Friday. Excelsior Classical Academy is facing Durham School of the Arts at the right time seeing as Durham School of the Arts is stuck on a nine-game losing streak.
