The Tarpon Springs Spongers and the Lakewood Spartans squared off in some playoff action on Tuesday, but sadly the Tarpon Springs Spongers had to settle for second. They took a hard 68-51 fall against the Spartans. The defeat unfortunately continues a disappointing trend for Tarpon Springs in their matchups with Lakewood: they've now lost nine in a row.
Tarpon Springs' defeat came despite a true team effort from the offense, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Geramyah Porter, who scored 17 points along with five assists and four steals. Porter is crushing the steal category: he's posted at least two every time he's taken the court this season. The team also got some help courtesy of Jomar Encarnacion, who scored 14 points along with five rebounds.
Tarpon Springs has not been sharp recently as the team's lost five of their last six games, which put a noticeable dent in their 6-11 record this season. As for Lakewood, the victory was the third in a row for them, bringing their record for this year to 10-14.
Tarpon Springs does not have any more games scheduled as of now. Lakewood is on the road again on Thursday and plays Robinson on February 8th. Lakewood is facing Robinson at the right time seeing as Robinson is stuck on a four-game losing streak.
