League recap: Desert Vista wins, gets boost in standings

Desert Vista was the team that gained the most ground in the standings this week, jumping from seventh to fifth in I Section III. The Thunder beat Dobson 49-0 earlier in the week.

Brophy College Prep extended the longest winning streak in the league this week by beating Westwood, 59-7. The victory was the sixth in a row for the team.

Josh Hoekstra was the most productive running back in the league this week. In 24 carries, he ran for 244 yards as Pinnacle beat Desert Mountain. Michael Sanders also contributed to the rushing game with 27 yards on the ground.

Galindo was the best wideout in I Section III this week as the Pioneers bested the Wolves. Galindo racked up seven receptions for 115 yards. Mason Hatton helped Pinnacle's passing attack out by catching five balls for 60 yards.

Kyle Allen threw for 355 yards and three touchdowns. He went 26-37 with one interceptions.

Desert Mountain's Allen and Mark Andrews have formed a dynamic duo this season, leading the league in both passing and receiving yards. Allen has thrown for 2322 yards this season, while Andrews, a 6-foot-6 receiver, has 60 catches for 1110 yards. Hoekstra from Pinnacle leads the league in rushing with 1456 yards.

The marquee game in the league this week will be the clash between Brophy College Prep and Dana Zupke's team. Scooter Molander's team enters the contest ranked seventh in the state, while the Pioneers ranks 15th.

Mountain Ridge's Treshawn Favors is a mere 65 yards away from breaking the 1,000-rushing-yards mark for the season. Favors has rushed for 935 yards on 173 carries so far this year.

Going into this week's game against Pinnacle, the Broncos' Tyler Bruggman needs 162 passing yards to surpass 2,000 on the season. Accruing a total of 22 touchdowns this year, Bruggman has thrown for 1838 yards with six interceptions.

Boulder Creek took down Bradshaw Mountain 61-3 last week, the largest margin of any game. Gunther Johnson threw for 106 yards and one touchdown and ran for three yards in the win.
