Cabell Midland is coming in fresh off a high-stakes matchup with another highly-ranked state team: Greenup County, who was ranked 15th in their home state at the time (Cabell Midland was ranked seventh). The Knights fell just short of the Musketeers by a score of 5-4 on Tuesday. The Knights' defeat signaled the end of their eight-game winning streak.
Becca Conrad made the most of her time at bat despite the final result and went 2-for-4 with one home run, two runs, and one triple. Baylee Smith was another key player, going 1-for-3 with one home run and two RBI.
Meanwhile, Riverside came tearing into Tuesday's match with six straight wins (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 6.8 runs), and they left with even more momentum. They put the hurt on the Patriots with a sharp 12-4 victory. Considering the Warriors have won 11 games by more than six runs this season, Tuesday's blowout was nothing new.
Shaylea Blackhurst spent all six innings played on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered four earned runs on eight hits.
At the plate, the team relied heavily on McKinley Clark, who went 1-for-3 with one triple, two RBI, and one run. Those two RBI gave her a new career-high. The team also got some help courtesy of Riley Smith, who went 1-for-3 with two runs and one RBI.
Riverside hit smart and finished the game with only one strikeout. The team has now struck out at least four batters in nine consecutive contests.
Riverside pushed their record up to 16-6 with the win, which was their seventh straight at home. Those home victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 3.6 runs on average over those games. As for Cabell Midland, their loss dropped their record down to 16-3.
Riverside's hitters will have their work cut out for them on Thursday. Cabell Midland has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 9.5 strikeouts per game. It's a different story for Riverside, though, as they've been averaging only 3.9 strikeouts. Will Cabell Midland keep running through batters, or will the Warriors buck the trend?
