Football Recap: Rio Mesa Skates Past Hueneme with Ease

The matchup between Rio Mesa and Hueneme on Tuesday hardly resembled the 18-6 effort from their previous meeting. The Spartans simply couldn't be stopped as they easily beat the Vikings 59-0. The game marked the Spartans' most dominant victory of the season so far.

A big part of Rio Mesa's win came down to the chemistry between Analysia Brewer and her top target Jadeline Gonzalez. Brewer picked up 99 receiving yards and three scores while Gonzalez threw for 183 yards and four TDs. Gonzalez has been hot, having posted three or more passing touchdowns the last five times she's played. Another big playmaker for Rio Mesa was Sophia Ramirez, who returned a punt for a touchdown.

Rio Mesa didn't go easy on the quarterback and picked off three passes before the game was over. The picks came courtesy of Nevaeh Gonzalez and Brewer. Another thorn in Hueneme's side was Anika Bittner, who picked up two sacks and made three total tackles (3.0 for loss).

Special teams played a big role in the game for Rio Mesa, adding 12 points to the final score. The biggest highlight from special teams (and perhaps the team as a whole) came courtesy of Brewer, who ran a punt back for a touchdown.

The victory keeps Rio Mesa at an undefeated 4-0. The wins came thanks in part to their defensive effort, having only surrendered 0.0 points on average this season. As for Hueneme, they are on a six-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 0-6.

Coming up, Rio Mesa is headed away from home for the first time to square off against Camarillo at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday. As for Hueneme, they will host Highland at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday.
