Basketball Recap: Cheylin's Loss Ends Four-Game Winning Streak at Home

Cheylin was the 63-32 winner over Wheatland-Grinnell when they last played one another back in February of 2024, but their luck changed this time around. The Cheylin Cougars fell 54-45 to the Wheatland-Grinnell Thunderhawks on Tuesday. While the Cougars didn't get the win, they did start the game off strong, beating the Thunderhawks 17-10 in the first quarter.

Cheylin's defeat came despite a true team effort from the offense, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Landon Schoenberger, who posted 15 points in addition to five assists and four steals. Schoenberger is on a roll when it comes to steals, as he's now grabbed two or more in the last five games he's played. Kohen Pochop was another key player, dropping a double-double on 11 points and 13 boards.

Wheatland-Grinnell can attribute much of their success to Daniel Mason, who dropped a double-double on 15 points and 11 rebounds. With that strong performance, Mason is now averaging an impressive 8.2 boards per game. The team also got some help courtesy of Spencer Beckman, who scored six points along with six assists and five steals.

Cheylin's loss ended a four-game streak of wins at home and dropped them to 7-7. As for Wheatland-Grinnell, their record is now 6-8.

A feisty cat fight is on tap when the Cheylin Cougars duke it out with the Wallace County Wildcats on Tuesday. As for Wheatland-Grinnell, they will take on Logan/Palco at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. Logan/Palco will roll in looking for their 14th straight win, something Wheatland-Grinnell surely won't give up without a fight.
