While it was all tied up 20-20 at halftime, the NCSSM: Durham Unicorns were not quite the Falls Lake Firebirds's equal in the second half on Friday. NCSSM: Durham took a hard 52-38 fall against Falls Lake. The loss unfortunately continues a disappointing trend for NCSSM: Durham in their matchups with Falls Lake: they've now lost seven in a row.
Despite the loss, NCSSM: Durham still got an impressive performance from Maren Donlon, who scored 19 points. That was a full 50% of NCSSM: Durham's points, marking the seventh time in a row she's earned more than a third of the team's points.
It was another big night for Emerson Thompson, who dropped a double-double on 27 points and 14 rebounds for Falls Lake. Thompson is absolutely dominating the rebound category: she's posted at least eight every time she's taken the court this season. The team also got some help courtesy of Destiny Williams, who scored 11 points along with eight rebounds and six steals.
NCSSM: Durham has not been sharp recently, as they've lost four of their last five matches, which put a noticeable dent in their 7-7 record this season. As for Falls Lake, the win makes it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 17-1.
Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. NCSSM: Durham will challenge East Wake Academy at 6:00 p.m. on Monday. Hopefully East Wake Academy focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 18 on Friday. As for Falls Lake, they will head out on the road to challenge Franklin Academy at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Franklin Academy will have to bring their A-game into this one, as they are staring down a pretty big deficit in the MaxPreps North Carolina Rankings (they are ranked 302nd, while Falls Lake is ranked 78th).
