Even though the Sunset Knights have not done well against the Varela Vipers recently (they were 2-7 in their previous nine matchups), they didn't let the past get in their way on Friday. Sunset sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 39-36 victory over Varela. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest win Sunset has posted since November 27, 2023.
Alyssa Torrech had an outrageously good game as she scored 16 points along with seven rebounds and seven steals. She has been hot recently, having posted two or more steals the last five times she's played. Bianca Pacheco was another key contributor, scoring 11 points along with seven rebounds and five steals.
Sunset's victory bumped their record up to 7-11. As for Varela, they are on a five-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 7-9.
Sunset will head out on the road to challenge TERRA Environmental at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Hopefully TERRA Environmental focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 16 on Friday. As for Varela, they will be playing in front of their home fans against Ferguson at 4:00 p.m. on Monday. Ferguson presents a significant challenge as they come into the match much higher ranked than Varela in Florida (Ferguson is ranked 166th, while Varela is ranked 523rd).
