Black River is 2-8 against Wellington since December of 2017 but they'll have a chance to close the gap a little bit on Wednesday. The Black River Pirates will be home for the holidays to greet the Wellington Dukes at 7:00 p.m. Wellington took a loss in their last game and will be looking to turn the tables on Black River, who comes in off a win.
Last Wednesday, it was close, but Black River sidestepped Clearview for a 52-49 win. Given Black River's advantage in MaxPreps' Ohio basketball rankings (they are ranked 342nd, while Clearview is ranked 702nd), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Meanwhile, Wellington was within striking distance but couldn't close the gap on Monday as they fell 45-41 to Monroeville. It was the first time this season that Wellington let down their fans at home.
Despite their defeat, Wellington saw several players rise to the challenge and make noteworthy plays. Taylor Morris, who scored 20 points along with four steals, was perhaps the best of all. Those 20 points set a new season-high mark for her. Another player making a difference was Brooke Lehmkuhl, who dropped a double-double on 12 points and ten rebounds.
Black River now has a winning record of 3-2. As for Wellington, their loss ended a four-game streak of wins at home and dropped them to 5-2.
Black River suffered a grim 54-30 defeat to Wellington when the teams last played back in February. Can Black River avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
