Cascade is 9-1 against Newport since May of 2023 and they'll have a chance to extend that dominance on Thursday. The Cougars will be playing at home against the Cubs at 5:00 p.m. Cascade is coming into the contest hot, having won their last 18 games.
While Cascade's win against Stayton wasn't quite the blowout it was the last time the pair played, they still came out on top. The Cougars skirted past the Eagles 4-2. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest victory the Cougars have posted since April 27th.
Taylor Bays spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered just two earned runs on seven hits and racked up six Ks.
On the hitting side, Cascade's win was truly a team effort as four different players contributed at least one hit. One of them was Cassidy Crabtree, who went 3-for-4 with one run.
Meanwhile, there's no place like home for Newport, who bounced back after a loss on the road on Monday. They had just enough and edged out Philomath 9-8 on Wednesday. Give some credit to the fans of both teams: the last five times they've met, the home team has come away the winner.
Newport also let their pitcher toss all seven innings and she was also dialed-in: Olivia Greenawald gave up six earned (and two unearned) runs on ten hits and racked up six Ks. As a matter of fact, that's the most runs Greenawald has scored all season.
At the plate, the team relied heavily on Baby Garrett, who went 3-for-4 with two stolen bases, one run, and one double. That's the most hits she has posted since back in April. Another player making a difference was Ivy Wagner, who went a perfect 2-for-2 with two runs and one RBI.
Cascade's victory bumped their record up to 20-5. As for Newport, their win bumped their record up to 7-24.
Newport's pitching crew has a crucial task ahead of them: Cascade hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .393. It's a different story for Newport, though, as they've only averaged .252. Will they be able to contain Cascade's hitters?
Everything went Cascade's way against Newport in their previous matchup last Monday, as Cascade made off with a 10-3 victory. Will the Cougars repeat their success, or do the Cubs have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
