The St. Mary's Saints's recent rough patch got a bit rougher on Friday after their fifth straight defeat. They took a 60-49 hit to the loss column at the hands of Durham Academy. The result was an unpleasant reminder to St. Mary's of the 44-35 defeat they experienced in the two teams' previous head-to-head fixture back in January.
When it comes to explaining why St. Mary's lost, one person who can't be blamed is Emme Seymour. Despite the final result, she scored 20 points. As a matter of fact, that's the most points Seymour has scored all season. Another player making a difference was Helen Newcomb, who scored nine points.
Durham Academy was led to victory by Rashyia "Shy" Williams and Sarra Abdelbarr. Williams dropped a double-double on 14 points and 18 rebounds, while Abdelbarr scored 27 points along with six steals. Williams hasn't dropped below eight rebounds for six straight games. The team also got some help courtesy of Fleming Burkert, who scored nine points along with five rebounds.
St. Mary's has traveled a rocky road recently having lost seven of their last eight matches, which put a noticeable dent in their 7-13 record this season. As for Durham Academy, the win (which was their third in a row) raised their record to 10-14.
Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. St. Mary's will face off against the Chargers at 5:30 p.m. on Friday. As for Durham Academy, they will head out on the road to challenge the Knights at 6:15 p.m. on Tuesday. One thing working in North Raleigh Christian Academy's favor is that they have posted big point totals in their last three matches.
