South El Monte is a perfect 10-0 against El Monte since April of 2021 and they'll have a chance to extend that dominance on Wednesday. The Eagles will welcome the Lions at 3:30 p.m. Each of these teams will be fighting to keep a win streak alive as South El Monte comes in on six and El Monte on four.
South El Monte proved they can win big two weeks ago (they won by 23) and on Monday they proved they can win the close ones too. They came out on top in a nail-biter against Garfield, sneaking past 16-14. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest win the Eagles have posted since March 28, 2025.
Katelyn Berumen was incredible, going 3-for-5 with one home run, four RBI, and two runs. Gia Castruita was another key player, going a perfect 4-for-4 with three RBI, one stolen base, and one run.
They weren't the only ones making solid contact: South El Monte kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 18 hits. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now got at least nine hits every time they've taken the field this season.
Meanwhile, El Monte had just enough and edged out Bell Gardens 7-6 last Friday.
Eve Reyes was a major factor no matter where she played. She looked comfortable on the mound, pitching seven innings while giving up five earned (and one unearned) runs off 11 hits. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't given up more than two walks in nine consecutive appearances. She was also stellar in the batter's box, going 2-for-3 with one home run and four RBI. That's the most RBI she has posted since back in March.
Reyes wasn't the only one making solid contact as four players wound up with at least one hit. One of them was Michelle Garcia, who went 1-for-2 with two runs.
El Monte's victory bumped their record up to 8-6. As for South El Monte, their win bumped their record up to 10-1-1.
Wednesday's matchup might come down to which pitcher can control the ball better. South El Monte has hit smart this season, having averaged an OBP of .616. However, it's not like El Monte struggles in that department as they've averaged .497. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
South El Monte got the 'W' in their previous matchup back in April of 2025 against El Monte by a conclusive 8-1 score. Will the Eagles repeat their success, or do the Lions have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
