It's unusual for a team to rise to No. 1 after losing its first game of the season but it was an unusual week in the MaxPreps Top 25. Stoneman Douglas, which last lost to
Park Vista (Lake Worth) on March 22, 2022, saw its 59-game win streak and chance to tie the Florida state record for consecutive victories come to an end with a 5-4 loss to
Lincoln (Tallahassee, Fla.) on Saturday.
The Eagles' loss opened the door for previous No. 2
Catholic-B.R. (Baton Rouge, La.) to take over the top spot. However, the Bears also lost Saturday at South Walton, falling 4-3 to
Winter Park (Fla.).
That put No. 3 Orange Lutheran in position to take over the No. 1 spot. The only problem is that the Lancers had already lost to
JSerra Catholic (San Juan Capistrano, Calif.) 3-0 on Friday in Trinity League play. The simple solution would be to move the No. 4 team in last week's rankings,
Corona (Calif.), to No. 1. But Corona lost to Orange Lutheran the week prior, which had allowed the Lancers to move ahead of Corona in last week's rankings.
The result is Orange Lutheran at No. 1 despite the loss to JSerra Catholic. The Lancers beat JSerra Catholic twice earlier in the week. Catholic-B.R. stayed at No. 2 since it defeated Lincoln earlier in the tournament while Stoneman Douglas dropped to No. 3. Corona, with a pair of extra-inning wins over Norco last week, stayed at No. 4.
The South Walton Showcase was rough for MaxPreps Top 25 teams. In addition to Stoneman Douglas and Catholic-B.R, previous No. 6
Lewisburg (Olive Branch, Miss.) lost twice and dropped to No. 18 while previous No. 11
Farragut (Knoxville, Tenn.) lost four times and dropped out of this week's rankings.
Lowndes (Valdosta, Ga.) and
Trinity Christian Academy (Jacksonville, Fla.) both moved into the rankings based on results from the South Walton Showcase. Lowndes (13-3), last year's AAAAAAA champion in Georgia, had a previous win over Lincoln and also defeated
Chiles (Tallahassee, Fla.), a team that beat Lewisburg at South Walton. Trinity Christian Academy, meanwhile, had a win over Lowndes and is off to an 8-1 start.
Dropped out: No. 11 Farragut (Knoxville, Tenn.), No. 14
Huntington Beach (Calif.), No. 24
St. Johns Country Day (Orange Park, Fla.)Newcomers: No. 23 Trinity Christian Academy, No. 24 Lowndes, No. 25
Rogers (Ark.)Game of the Week: Lincoln 5, Stoneman Douglas 4. The Eagles trailed 5-2 heading into the bottom of the seventh inning against Lincoln and got a two-run home run from
Devin Fitz-Gerald, his second of the game. However, a groundout ended the rally and gave Stoneman Douglas its first loss in two years.
Game to Watch: Orange Lutheran vs.
Santa Margarita (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.). The Lancers face a tough test in their first week at No. 1 as they play a three-game Trinity League series against the Eagles. Santa Margarita defeated Orange Lutheran four times last year and won the Trinity League title and the Southern California championship.
Player of the Week: Konnor Griffin,
Jackson Prep (Jackson, Miss.). The early favorite for MaxPreps National Player of the Year, Griffin batted 7-for-9 last week with seven runs scored with a double and a home run. He also struck out 12 against Sumrall in picking up his fourth win of the season. Griffin leads the nation, according to the MaxPreps leaderboards, in runs scored (40) and is second in stolen bases (49).
Streaks: The nation's longest win streak now belongs to
Eaton (Colo.), which has won 41 in a row. The Big Red open their season today at
Northridge (Greeley).
