The Leyden Eagles will look to take advantage of their home field for the first time this season as they take on the Glenbard South Raiders at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday. Leyden is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 8 runs per game this season.
Leyden will roll into the matchup after a wild two-game stretch: they only put up two runs on Wednesday, then bounced right back against Fenton on Thursday. Leyden put the hurt on Fenton with a sharp 20-5 win. The Eagles have beaten the Bison the last six times they've met, but they better watch out: this was the closest the Bison has come to flipping the script.
Nick Cozzi was a major factor while hitting and pitching. He pitched one inning while giving up no earned runs or hits. Cozzi was also big at the plate, scoring a run and stealing a base while going 1-for-2.
In other batting news, Angel Gutierrez was a standout: he scored four runs and stole a base while getting on base in three of his five plate appearances. He also put up a home run, which was his first of the season. Another player making a difference was Julian Martinez, who went 2-for-4 with one home run, four RBI, and two runs.
Leyden always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .542. The last time their OBP was this high was back in April of 2024.
Meanwhile, Glenbard South was not able to break out of their rough patch on Thursday as the team picked up their third straight loss. They were a single run away from ending the streak, but they lost a 6-5 heartbreaker at the hands of Plainfield Central.
Glenbard South also got a good showing from Lucas Wilder, who didn't allow a single earned run over four innings pitched. Wilder has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't given up more than one earned run any time he's pitched this season.
At the plate, Jacob Garbett was cooking despite his team's loss, firing off two home runs and four RBI while getting on base in all four of his plate appearances.
Glenbard South's defeat dropped their record down to 1-3. As for Leyden, they now have a winning record of 3-2.
Glenbard South's pitching crew has a crucial task ahead of them: Leyden hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .336. It's a different story for Glenbard South, though, as they've only averaged .238. Will they be able to contain Leyden's hitters?
Leyden couldn't quite finish off Glenbard South in their previous matchup back in March of 2024 and fell 8-6. Can Leyden avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
