MLB Draft: Top 10 high school pitching prospects

With the Major League Baseball First Year Player Selection draft set for today, MaxPreps looks at the top 10 high school pitchers available for selection.

Lucas Giolito, Harvard-Westlake (North Hollywood, Calif.), RHP
He hit 100 mph early this season but an arm injury sidelined Giolito after just three outings this season. Still, Giolito is likely the first high school pitcher taken, although he will probably be about the fifth pitcher selected overall. He has good size at 6-foot-6 and good mechanics. Scouts love his potential despite the injury.

Lance McCullers, Jesuit (Tampa, Fla.), RHP
Named the Gatorade National Player of the Year, McCullers has the velocity necessary to go high in the first round. He was consistently in the upper 90s this year and he also has two other pitches - a change and a curve - that will serve him well at the next level. Feature

Max Fried, Harvard-Westlake (North Hollywood, Calif.), LHP
The top lefthander in the draft, Fried has impressed with his curveball. He can also throw in the low 90s. He's 6-foot-4, but only 170 pounds, so he has plenty of room to grow and add strength. Feature

Matthew Smoral, Solon (Ohio), LHP
An injury sidelined Smoral for most of the season. He has a big frame at 6-8 and it will be interesting to see how much the stress fracture in his foot will cause his stock to drop. His fastball is in the low 90s and scouts list him with an above average curveball. Feature

Zach Eflin, Hagerty (Oviedo, Fla.), RHP
Eflin has been on the rise this season thanks to an improved fastball that hovers in the mid-90s. Scouts also list Eflin with a good changeup but note that his curveball is below average. Like several other pitchers on the list, Eflin battled injuries his senior year which makes it difficult to predict where he will go in the draft.

Ty Hensley, Edmond Santa Fe (Okla.), RHP
One of the top power pitchers in the draft, Hensley's fastball ranges in the mid-90s with an above average curveball. He also has proved to be an outstanding hitter with 10 home runs his senior year. He likely will be drafted as pitcher, however. Feature

Nick Travieso, Archbishop McCarthy (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.), RHP
Opinions vary on Travieso with several mock drafts having him going late in the first round. He's 6-3 and has a fastball that has reached 99 mph. However his off-speed pitches have yet to show consistency, which is the reason behind the uncertainty of his draft selection.

Lucas Sims, Brookwood (Snellville, Ga.), RHP
Another pitcher who has outstanding velocity (98 mph) but is also working to improve his offspeed pitches. He had an outstanding senior season in leading his team to the state championship and could go later in the first round or in the sandwich rounds. Feature

Walker Weickel, Olympia (Orlando, Fla.), RHP
Good size and an above average curveball have Weickel looking at possibly going in the first round. His velocity is consistently in the low 90s which is why his stock has fallen a bit since last summer. Feature

Hunter Virant, Camarillo (Calif.), RHP
Virant is a rare high school pitcher who has four pitches he can count on, including a changeup, slider and curveball. His fastball is in the high 80s to low 90s. Scouts like his potential, however.
