D1 District 2 (8 Man) recap Oct. 30, 2012
Guardian Angels Central Catholic was able to crack the Top 25 in the state rankings this week after topping McCool Junction. The Bluejays came in at 17 in the state poll after placing at number 32 last week.
Howells-Dodge extended the longest winning streak in D1 District 2 (8 Man) this week by beating Nebraska Christian, 44-20. This was the team's ninth consecutive win.
Clarkson/Leigh's dynamic duo of John Steffensmeier and Colton Tomka proved tough for Creighton to stop, as they were the top passer and receiver in the league this week. Steffensmeier threw for 31 yards and one touchdown and Tomka had 26 yards receiving. Thomas Bunner helped Clarkson/Leigh's passing attack out by catching one ball for 11 yards.
Brandon Wragge was the most productive running back in the league this week. He ran for 114 yards on 22 carries as Howells-Dodge fell to the Bulldogs. Matthew Gooch also contributed to the rushing game with 76 yards on the ground.
Nathan Bazata made the biggest impact on defense this week as Mike Speirs' team defeated the Eagles. The senior grabbed two sacks.
Clarkson/Leigh's Logan Went and Thomas Urban have formed a dynamic duo this season, leading the league in both passing and receiving yards. Went has thrown for 411 yards this season, while Urban, a 5-foot-11 receiver, has 12 catches for 240 yards. Gooch from the Jaguars leads the league in rushing with 956 yards.
The marquee game in D1 District 2 (8 Man) this week will be the clash between Howells-Dodge and Guardian Angels Central Catholic. The Jaguars enters the contest ranked sixth in the state, while Dave Ridder's team ranks 17th.
Howells-Dodge's Gooch needs only 44 yards against the Bluejays next week to surpass 1,000 rushing yards for the season.
The top two defenses in the league will face off this season when the Jaguars take on Guardian Angels Central Catholic. Howells-Dodge has allowed 126 points this season, while the Bluejays have given up 135. The Jaguars allowed 20 points last week as they topped Nebraska Christian.
Guardian Angels Central Catholic took down the Mustangs 26-0 last week, the largest margin of any game.
